Exminster — Devon, England
The village of Exminster is located adjacent to the river Exe at the southern edge of the City of Exeter, and is one of the ancient parishes whose existence once relied upon the ecclesiastical division in Devon County.
There are several old buildings of interest in Exminster, most notable being the former mental health asylum, situated on a hill overlooking the Exe estuary. The asylum opened in 1845 and was designed by Charles Fowler, the Covent Garden Market architect. After the asylum closed, the structure suffered many years of neglect until this huge building and surrounding acreage was converted into beautiful luxury dwellings and townhouses.
Exminster Marsh is part of The Exe Estuary nature reserve, one of the most popular areas visited by tourists and locals alike. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) maintains a shop and offers cruises and events to the public. During the course of the year there are thousands of birds to be seen, especially migratory species. There are also several trails connecting Exminster with the River Exe, including the Exeter Canal Cycle Path, as well as the South West Coast Path.
While in Exminster look into a tour of Exeter's Underground Passages, the medieval tunnel built under Exeter's city center in the 14th century to transport fresh water from the springs outside the walls. You can also enjoy beautiful views of the Exe Estuary while at Exminster Golf Centre, set on fifty-five acres of land with a natural spring draining into two lakes. Or visit the Medieval Castle of Powderham by the estuary of the River Exe, with its magnificent furnished Halls and State Rooms; home of the Courtenay family for over 600 years. Finally, stop at one of the local pubs and have a pint of locally brewed Ferryman Ale. The popular Ferryman Ale is brewed by Topsham and Exminster Brewery, located in what was once a Royal Air Force radar station on the Exminster Marshes RSPB reserve.
